Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review isla s I loved this film - the plot (the philosophical angles), the CGI effects, the cast and characters etc. Its quite imaginative - not entirely a religious film, it pokes fun at Christianity I suppose - its definitely what I regard as a sort of surreal comedy with fantasy elements. I thought the young girl who plays Gods daughter was particularly good - she looks so innocent and naive and yet is quite the schemer and I enjoyed seeing how her father reacted to the things she did. There is, perhaps surprisingly, a sense of poignancy at times - it does at least touch on some serious themes, mainly mortality but I wouldn't say it entirely laughs off serious issues. Its a hard film to review without giving away spoilers but I felt it handled the themes well and it did make me laugh on a number of ocassions but not in a cheap way, if that makes sense. Also, one plot element made me think of the film Being John Malkovich - it is perhaps similar in terms of zany, wacky quirkiness. I also quite liked the classical music played at times, although I suppose some may think it makes it seem a bit pretentious. Personally, I thoroughly recommend this film. The film unfolds in the search for her daughter's freedom in the earthly world, looking for apostles, there are several analogies that can be interpreted in different ways, but what catches the eye is neither the text of the film, but its cinematography, we have a direction that seeks a visual beauty of the simple and the unusual, at times reminds me a lot of the direction of Lars Von Trier, this constant search to purify dirty characters through the visual, it's really beautiful, and together with a beautiful soundtrack construction we have unexpected moments visually above the average of the feature film. "The newest testament" is a good film, with good performances, a good satirical humor and a direction that proposes to do something too big for the proposal, we have an edition that creates a certain belly, speeds up in a few moments and pauses in others, some characters are left undeveloped and the overall work is lost a little. 7.5/10.
